PASADENA & ALTADENA, CA

The Cost to Play Should Never Be a Child's Potential.

Dena United is building a low to zero-cost, community-based alternative to the traditional pay-to-play youth sports system in Pasadena and Altadena. We believe every child deserves a safe place to play, a team to belong to, and an opportunity to reach their full potential—regardless of their family's income.

THE PLAY EQUITY GAP

California's Kids Are Being Left on the Sidelines.

The 2026 California Play Equity Report, commissioned by the LA84 Foundation, surveyed more than 2,000 California parents representing 3,300 youth and found significant gaps in access to sports, play, and physical activity.

76%

INACTIVITY

of California youth do not meet the CDC recommendation of 60 minutes of daily physical activity.

60%

FINANCIAL STRUGGLE

Of California parents struggle to afford youth sports costs under the pay-to-play model.

1 in 3

ACESS LOST

California kids stopped playing sports entirely during the past two years.

22%

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

of parents say it would be difficult for their child to access a place locally where they can play sports or participate in regular physical activity.

MORE THAN A GAME

Soccer Builds Life Skills.

Sports give young people more than a place to play-they give them a place to grow, belong, and build confidence.

Through soccer, kids develop:

01

Physical Health

Strength, coordination, endurance, and healthy habits built through consistent movement and play.

02

Mental Resilience

Confidence, focus, discipline, and the ability to overcome setbacks-learned through every match and training session.

03

Social Skills

Communication, teamwork, leadership, respect, and accountability-forged on the field together.

03

Life Skills

Goal-setting, perseverance, responsibility, problem-solving, and learning from failure-skills that extend far beyond the pitch.

"A coach can become a mentor. A teammate can become a friend. A difficult game can become a lesson in resilience."

We believe soccer isn't just about developing better players. It's about developing better people.

A place to play. A team to belong to. A pathway to thrive.

The message is clear:

Kids need sports. Families value sports. But access is not equal.

Our Response

Dena United Is Building a Different Model.

The 2026 Play Equity Report confirms what many Pasadena and Altadena families already know: cost, access, transportation, and availability can determine who gets to play. Dena United is working to remove those barriers in our community.

Player Costs Subsidized

FROM PAY-TO-PLAY TO PLAY EQUITY

We Don't Believe a Child's Potential Should Depend on a Parent's Ability to Pay.

Traditional youth soccer can require thousands of dollars in annual registration, equipment, uniforms, league, tournament, and travel costs.

Dena United aims provide those opportunities at low to no cost to participating families.

OUR THREE-PART PLAY EQUITY MODEL

Access. Leadership. Opportunity.

01 — ACCESS

More Free Space to Play

We activate neighborhood schools, mini-pitches, parks, and community facilities so young people have safe places to play close to home.

02 — LEADERSHIP

Invest in Local Coach Mentors

We train and employ local teenagers and community members to become mentors, coaches, and future leaders.

03 — OPPORTUNITY

An Alternative to Pay-to-Play

We aim to provide academy quality player development, academic support, mentorship, league participation, and tournament opportunities without the traditional price tag.

OUR STORY

From The Neighborhood, For The Neighborhood

Building Play Equity in Pasadena & Altadena

Dena United was born in 2025 in response to challenges facing our community following the Eaton Canyon Fire and other disruptions affecting local families.

We saw an opportunity to transform neighborhood public spaces into places of healing, connection, health, and opportunity.

Today, we are working with schools, nonprofit organizations, soccer organizations, and community partners to create a stronger local sports ecosystem.
